Correct Keyboard Height for Typing Without Shoulder Pain

If your shoulders creep toward your ears by mid afternoon, or the outside of your forearm aches after a long typing day, the culprit is often the keyboard height.

If your shoulders creep toward your ears by mid afternoon, or the outside of your forearm aches after a long typing day, the culprit is often the keyboard height. Most desks are built at a fixed 72 to 76 cm, and for many people that puts the keys several centimeters too high, so the shoulders hike up to reach them all day long.

The good news is that the correct keyboard height is easy to measure with a tape measure and a friend, and fixing it rarely needs expensive gear. Here is how to find your number and then reach it.

What correct keyboard height actually means

The goal is simple: when your hands rest on the home row, your upper arms hang relaxed from your shoulders and your elbows sit at roughly 90 to 110 degrees. Your forearms are close to level, or tilted very slightly downward toward the keys, and your wrists stay straight rather than bent up.

In practice, that means the top of the keyboard's home row should sit at about the height of your elbow, or up to 2 or 3 cm below it. Not above it. Even 3 cm above elbow height is enough to make the shoulder muscles work constantly, which is where that end of day tension comes from.

How to measure your ideal keyboard height

You need a tape measure and five minutes. Do this in the chair you actually use, with your normal shoes on.

  1. Set your chair first. Feet flat on the floor, thighs roughly level, knees around 90 degrees. If you are unsure, our guide to choosing a chair height that matches your desk walks through it.
  2. Sit tall and relax your shoulders. Let your arms hang at your sides, then bend your elbows to 90 degrees with your forearms level.
  3. Measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm just in front of the elbow. This is your elbow height. For many adults it lands between 60 and 70 cm when seated.
  4. Subtract the keyboard's thickness. Measure from the desk surface to the top of the home row keys. A low profile board might be 1.5 cm, a typical mechanical board 3 to 4 cm.
  5. Subtract again for a slight downward slope of 0 to 2 cm if you like.

The result is your ideal surface height for the keyboard. For example: elbow height of 66 cm, minus a 3.5 cm mechanical keyboard, minus 1 cm for slope, gives a keyboard surface at about 61.5 cm. Compare that with a standard 74 cm desk and you can see the 12 cm problem many people live with.

Seated elbow heightKeyboard surface for a 3.5 cm boardGap vs. 74 cm desk
60 cmabout 55.5 to 56.5 cmroughly 18 cm too high
65 cmabout 60.5 to 61.5 cmroughly 13 cm too high
70 cmabout 65.5 to 66.5 cmroughly 8 cm too high

These are rough figures. Your own measurement always wins over a chart.

Ways to fix keyboard height that is too high

Once you know the gap, choose the fix that matches its size.

Raise the chair and support your feet

For gaps of up to about 8 cm, raising your chair is usually the cheapest fix. The catch is that your feet may stop reaching the floor, so add a footrest or a sturdy box of the right height. This keeps your thighs supported and your knees comfortable.

Lower the desk

Height adjustable desks, both electric and manual crank, make this trivial. Many fixed desks also have adjustable leg feet or bolt holes at several heights; check underneath before you assume yours is fixed.

Add a keyboard tray

For gaps larger than 8 to 10 cm, a tray mounted under the desk can drop the keyboard by 10 cm or more while keeping the monitor where it is. We tested this setup in detail in whether an under desk keyboard tray is worth installing. Make sure the tray is wide enough for your mouse too, or you will reach up and sideways for it all day.

Choose a thinner keyboard

Swapping a 4 cm high mechanical board for a 2 cm low profile one gains you 2 cm with no tools at all. It is not enough on its own for most people, but combined with a chair adjustment it often closes the gap.

Why you should fold the keyboard feet back in

Many keyboards ship with little flip-out feet at the back, and plenty of people use them by default because it looks like the "proper" angle. I would argue most typists are better off with the feet folded away.

Raising the back edge tilts the keys toward you and forces the wrist to bend upward, which ergonomists call wrist extension. Combined with a desk that is already too high, it adds even more strain. If anything, a flat keyboard or one with a slight negative tilt, where the front edge is a touch higher than the back, keeps the wrists straighter. Try a week with the feet tucked in before deciding. Most people stop noticing within a couple of days.

Common mistakes after you adjust keyboard height

  • Forgetting the mouse. The mouse should sit at the same height as the keyboard and close to it. A high mouse undoes the benefit on one side of your body.
  • Leaning on hard desk edges. If the edge digs into your forearms, round it with a soft desk mat or palm rest rather than raising your arms.
  • Letting the monitor drop with the desk. If you lower the whole desk, the screen may now be too low. Raise it back up with a stand or arm so the top of the screen is near eye level.
  • Setting it once and never checking. Chairs sink, cushions compress and shoes change. Recheck every few months.

Laptop users face a tougher version of this problem because the screen and keyboard are attached. Our guide to laptop ergonomics when you work without a proper desk covers the workarounds.

Frequently asked questions

How high should a keyboard be when sitting?

The home row should sit at or slightly below seated elbow height, with elbows bent around 90 to 110 degrees and shoulders relaxed. For many adults that means a keyboard surface somewhere between 56 and 67 cm from the floor, depending on body size and keyboard thickness.

Is a standard desk too high for typing?

For a large share of people, yes. Standard desks are usually 72 to 76 cm tall, while the ideal keyboard surface for many seated adults is closer to 60 to 65 cm. Raising the chair with a footrest or adding a keyboard tray are the common fixes.

Should my keyboard be tilted toward me or away?

Flat or tilted slightly away is usually better for your wrists. Tilting the keyboard toward you with the rear feet bends the wrist upward. Fold the feet in and see how your wrists feel after a week.
